Corporal

Starting Salary $61,908

The Corporal performs inmate supervision duties in compliance with the Board of Corrections Standards for Jails, Policies and Procedures established by the Southside Regional Jail Authority and written Post Orders.  The Corporal may act as Officer in Charge in the absence of the Sergeant or other higher ranking officer.  This position is designated as essential personnel, and required to work, regardless of adverse weather conditions.

Typical Tasks (Include, but not limited to):
Performs required duties of a Regional Jail Officer when needed;
Directs the activities of inmates in controlled and uncontrolled environment;
Assigns and supervises work of jail officers, maintaining security in the facility in the absence of the Sergeant or higher ranking personnel;
Assists in the training of jail officers;
Acts as Officer in Charge during the absence of the Shift Commander and Assistant Shift Commander;
Monitors inmate compliance with facility rules;
Performs all required inmate and facility checks in determining compliance with State Standards and documents such activity in the logs;
Performs Intake/Booking functions;
Transports inmates, as needed or assigned;
Writes reports concerning inmate behavior or other facility functions;
Investigates rule and/or criminal infractions and takes appropriate action including sanctions and criminal charges;
Writes inmate disciplinary reports;
Conducts regular security and sanitation inspections of the facility;
Cooperates with other Law Enforcement Personnel;
Any other duties as assigned by higher authority.

Minimum Qualifications:
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
Required to be a certified jail officer within one (1) year of the beginning employment;
Must possess a driver’s license valid in Virginia.
Special Requirements:
Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older;
Must be a United States citizen;

Must maintain certification in all Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) mandated training as a jail officer in the state of Virginia;

Employment with Southside Regional Jail


  • Security Staff must be 18 years of age, and must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Entry Level/ Uncertified Officer starting salary is $51,214.
  • Certification Training paid by Southside Regional Jail
  • There are rotating Day and Night Shifts. Work Schedule - 12 hour shifts
  • 13 workdays and 1 paid Holiday per 28 day cycle.
  • Annual leave and Sick leave accrued at 12 hours for each 28 day cycle.
  • Paid employee health insurance; dependent coverage available at employee's expense.
  • Retirement provided through Virginia Retirement System (VRS) with Law Enforcement Officers Supplement (LEOS). Employees are required to pay 5% of their monthly salary towards VRS retirement, Southside Regional Jail pays the rest.
  • A physical exam is required on all new employees. Pre-employment drug testing is required with random drug testing throughout employment.
  • Criminal Records and Driver's License Records will be checked on all new employees. All employees must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.
  • All Southside Regional Jail employees must have and maintain a working telephone. A cellular telephone satisfies this requirement.

Jail Officer
Starting Salary $51,214- Uncertified or $56,045- Certified
DCJS certification preferred but not required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, pass a background check and drug screening, possess an operator's license valid in the state of Virginia and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Regional Jail Superintendent 

Southside Regional Jail Authority is accepting applications from Tuesday, July 14 through Friday, August 7 at 5:00 pm, for the position of Superintendent for the Southside Regional Jail, an adult correctional facility in Emporia, Virginia serving Greensville County and the City of Emporia.

Candidates should possess a minimum of five years' experience at a supervisory level in correctional operations with a public, private or military agency. The position requires certification through the American Jail Association as a Certified Jail Manager, or the commitment to obtain such certification within one year' from date of hire, as well as certification in and maintenance of all Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated training as a jail officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to or graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, public administration or related field; master’s degree preferred.


The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A benefits package includes participation in the Virginia Retirement System, to include LEOS; paid health insurance including medical, dental, and vision; life insurance; and vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
